Canis Major
for tenor and piano
Composed June 2019
One of the annual traditions of the Brevard Music Center is the New Art Song Concert, a project in which all composition fellows write a musical setting of the same poem. The concert showcases the composition studio's variety of interpretations and styles: though all the text is the same, no two songs sounded remotely similar. In 2019, the year I attended, the chosen poem was Robert Frost's Canis Major. In my setting, I aimed to convey the awestruck wonder one feels when gazing at the stars.
