Moments (Of Beauty and Depravity)
for soprano and Pierrot ensemble
Composed June - July 2019
I. Scarcely do we choose life
II. I won't tell God
III. I cling to the thought of you
Moments (Of Beauty and Depravity) is a song cycle in three movements, set to my own poetry. Each poem is a portrait of a lover in various stages of her infatuation. The first, Scarcely Do We Choose Life, depicts the her in the carefree "honeymoon phase". In the second, I Won't Tell God, she is obsessed - nearly manic - by her desire. And the final song, I Cling to the Thought of You, shows her at her most vulnerable, after the loss of her love.
The piece was premiered at Brevard Music Center in July 2019, featuring soprano Sydney Windham and members of the Itch New Music Ensemble.
